A little National League baseball today between the Chicago Cubs and the Arizona Diamondbacks at Chase Field in Arizona. This is game four of a four game series. The Cubs took game one by a score of 14-6 and Arizona took game two by a score of 4-3. Chicago is 4-1 the last five games in this series.

Last year the Cubs were led mostly by their pitching, and now this year their hitting has caught up. Last year the Cubs ranked 29th in the league in hitting (.244) and they were 15th in runs scored (689), but so far after four games they are tops in the league in scoring (7.75 rpg) and 10th in hitting (.271). If this offense remains for real then the Cubs will be very tough to beat for most of this year. They are a very complete team, but they did lose a part of that offense on Friday when Kyle Schwarber, who had 16 Homers in just 69 games last year, was lost for the season. Still this is a very deep team and they will find away to get around his loss.
The pitching for the Cubs ranked 3rd in the league in ERA last year and 1st in K’s and while they are just 20th in Ks so far, they are also 4th in ERA (2.52) and 1st in WHIP (0.81). Getting the start in this game will be Jake Arrieta, who is off a year in which he won the Cy Young award. He started this year off in fine fashion as he beat the Angels 9-0, allowing just two hits in seven innings of work. Last year he was 22-6 with a 1.77 ERA overall, including 13-1 with a 1.60 ERA on the road. In his career vs the Diamondbacks he has gone 1-1 with a 2.63 ERA in three starts and he is 19-17 with a 3.37 ERA in day games in his career.

The Arizona Diamondbacks have been picked by many to be a player in the NL West, but that just won’t happen until they get their pitching in order. Arizona was to have help this year on their staff when they brought in Zack Greinke from the Dodgers, but he was hit hard in his first game, allowing seven ERs on nine hits in just four innings of work. That may have been the worst start of his career. As a team the Diamondbacks are now 27th in the league in ERA at 7.00 and 25th in WHIP at 1.56. That is worse than last years rankings of 17th in ERA (4.04) and 21st in WHIP (1.33) They have taken on two very good offensive teams in the early going in the Cubs and Rockies, so we will see if they can get it together vas the season goes on.

For this game the Diamondbacks will send out Shelby Miller, who was 6-17 with a 3.02 ERA in 33 starts for the Braves last year. Including 3-8 with a 3.67 ERA on the road. Despite his bad year, he was still invited to the All-Star game. He had a very strong year ERA wise, but just couldn’t get much run support from his mates. This year in his first start he got 11 runs worth of support as his team beat the Rockies 11-6, but he got a no-decision and didn’t pitch well in the game, allowing six ERs on eight hits in just six innings of work. Miller is 1-2 with a 2.83 ERA in seven games (Six starts) in his career vs the Cubs. The offense has not been a problem for Arizona so far as they come in ranked 10th in scoring at 5.60 rpg and 5th in hitting at .288.

[963] Chicago -1.5 (-110) over Arizona
Hard to go against Arrieta, who has just been dominant, especially on the road. The Cubs offense has been very hot so far and will take aim at Miller, who was hit very hard in his debut for the Diamondbacks. With the way the Chicago offense is rolling, the way that Arrieta has pitched on the road, plus the way the Arizona pitching staff is struggling, this is a nice spot to play the road team on the runline. Cubs roll here.

Chicago Cubs vs Pittsburgh Pirates Wildcard Playoff Betting Preview & Free Pick

MLB Playoff Preview: Chicago Cubs vs Pittsburgh Pirates

Written By David Hess (Follow me on Twitter @DavidHess311)

When: 8:00 PM ET, Wednesday, October 7, 2015
Where: PNC Park in Pittsburgh, Pa
Televised: ESPN

Odds:  Pittsburgh opened up as favorites of -110, but the money has com in heavily on the Cubs and they are now the favorites at -131. The OU line has been bet down from 6 to R.5, with juice on the Over (-115)

The Chicago Cubs have made it back to the postseason, with hopes of going all the way to the World Series. This is a team built on youth and experience and anything can happen should they make it past the Pirates in this one. Chicago went 97-65 on the year and they were a solid team on the road where they went 48-33 for the year. the Cubes were 6-3 at PNC Park this year.

Getting the Ball for the Cubs in this one is Jake Arrieta, who just may end up winning the Cy Young award this year. Arrieta has gone 22-6 on the year with a 1.77 ERA, while on the road he has gone a stellar 13-1 with a 1.60 ERA. Jake is 6-1 with a 1.68 ERA in 9 career starts vs Pittsburgh, which includes going 3-0 with a 2.25 ERA in 5 career starts at PNC Park. Jake has faced them 5 times this year and is 3-1 with an 0.75 ERA in those starts.

The Cubs rank 16th in the league in scoring (4.25 rpg) 29th in hitting (.244) and 12th in homers (171). On the road they have hit just .243 and have scored 4.48 rpg.

The Pittsburgh Pirates come in with the 2nd best record in all of baseball, which really seems unfair to them that hey are in this one game playoff and have to face Jake Arrieta to boot. Still Pittsburgh does have the advantage of playing at home where they have gone a very solid 53-28 on the year.

Pittsburgh will send out their own ace in Cole Gerrit, who has gone 19-8 with a 2.60 ERA overall, while at home he went 9-3 with a 2.83 ERA. Gerrit also has goon numbers vs the Cubs in his career, going 7-1 with a 2.88 ERA in 9 starts vs them, including going 2-1 with a 2.13 ERA in 4 starts vs the Cubs this year.

Pittsburgh comes in ranked 11th in the league in scoring (4.30 rpg), 9th in hitting (.260) and 23rd in homeruns (140). At home they have hit .254 and have scored 4.23 rpg on the year.

[934] Chicago/ Pittsburgh Under 5.5 I will be looking at the Under in this game. This is playoff baseball at it's finest as we have two pitchers that not only have great umber this year but also have great career numbers in their meetings with the tams they are facing in this one. Jake Arrietts has allowed just 2 ERs total in his last 9 starts and he has a career 1.68 ERA in 9 starts vs the Pirates. Gerrit Cole hasn't been as dominant as Jake has been this year, but he pitches well at home, has a career 2.88 ERA vs the Cubs and Chicago just isn't a good hitting team. This one has 2-1 written all over it.

ESPN Sunday Night Baseball Chicago Cubs vs Los Angeles Dodgers Preview & Free Pick

MLB Preview: Chicago Cubs vs Los Angeles Dodgers

Written By David Hess (Follow me on Twitter @DavidHess311)

When: 8:05 PM ET, Sunday, August 30, 2015
Where: Chavez Ravine in Los Angeles, California
Televised: ESPN

Odds: The Cubs opened as favorites of -115 and it has been bet up slightly to -118. The OU line currently sits at 6.5 with juice to the Over (-120)

The pitching matchup for this game has Jake Arrieta of the Cubs facing off with Alex Wood of the Dodgers.

Jake Arietta has been the ace of this staff as he comes in with a 16-6 record and a 2.22 ERA. Even more impressive is his last 6 starts where he is 6-0 with an 0.91 ERA. On the road this year he has gone 10-1 with a 1.94 ERA, which is also very impressive. Jake has faced the Dodgers twice in his career and hasn’t had good success, going 0-2 with a 9.00 ERA in those starts.

Alex wood comes into this game with a 9-8 record and a 3.70 ERA overall for the year. Since he was traded to the Dodgers he has gone 2-2 with a 4.34 ERA in 5 starts, while at Chavez Ravine he is 1-0 with a 4.26 ERA in 1 start as a dodgers. In his career he has gone 2-0 with a 1.96 ERA in 5 appearances (3 starts) in this park. Alex is 1-0 with a 4.50 ERA in 4 games ( 1 start) vs the Cubs in his career.

Important Stats: On the road this year the Cubs and have hit just .242 overal, including the same .242 vs righties, while scoring 4.37 rpg away from home. Their pitching has been decent on the road, with a 3.64 ERA and a 1.24 WHIP. The Dodgers are a struggling offensive team overall, but they have hit .255 at home, including .256 vs righties and they have scored 4.4 rpg at home. The pitching has been very good at home as they have a 3.17 ERA and a 1.10 WHIP at Chavez Ravine for the year.

The Cubs are locked in a battle for the 2nd wildcard spot, while the Dodgers seem to be fading a bit. Yes they are locked in a battle for the NL West, but they just are not playing all that well and I can’t see that changing in this game. Jake Arrieta is on a roll as he is 6-0 with an 091 ERA in his last 6 starts and he has a very strong 10-1 record with a 1.94 ERA on the road. He has poor numbers in 2 starts vs the Dodgers, but hasn’t faced them since 2013. Alex wood has not been sharp for the Dodgers so far and I don’t expect him to have a good game vs a Chicago team that just looks more focused. The Cubs are 12-1 in Arrieta’s road starts and 11-3 in his night starts and those are hard numbers to buck, especially vs an LA team that can’t score right now.

ESPN Wednesday Baseball Chicago Cubs vs San Francisco Giants Preview & Free Pick

MLB Preview: Chicago Cubs vs San Francisco Giants

Written By David Hess (Follow me on Twitter @DavidHess311)

When: 10:15 PM ET, Wednesday, August 25, 2015
Where: AT&T Park in San Francisco, California
Televised: ESPN

Odds:  The game opened with San Francisco favored at -112 and it has pretty much stayed that way with San Fran favored at -113. The OU line has been set 7 with juice on the Over (-120).

The pitching matchup for this game has Kyle Hendricks squaring off against Jake Peavy.

Kyle Hendricks has not been spectacular for the Cubs but he has been solid as he comes in with a 6-5 record and a 4.03 ERA. He has struggled with his ERA of late, posting a 5.60 ERA in his last 5 starts, but he is 2-0 in those starts. On the road this year he is 4-3 with a 4.44 ERA. He has faced the Giants once and it was this year. In that game he got the win 8-6 and allowed 3 ERs in just 5.1 innings.

Jake Peavy has not pitched well at all for the Giants as he is 3-6 with a 4.35 ERA in 11 starts. In his last 5 starts he is just 1-2, but has pitched better with a 3.77 ERA. August has been a decent month for him in his career as he is 31-24 with a 3.07 ERA in 69 career starts during this month. Against the Cubs he is 8-6 with a 2.81 ERA in 17 career starts, but just 1-3 with a 6.00 ERA in his last 4 starts vs them.

The Cubs have not hit really well on the road as they have averaged just .247 overall, including just .244 vs righties, but they have scored well on the road, averaging 4.53 rpg. Their pitching has been decent on the road as they have a 3.51 ERA and a 1.24 WHIP away from home.

The Giants offense has hit really well at home, where they have a .265 average overall, including .261 vs righties. Scoring has been a slight problem for them at home, where they have averaged just 3.97 rpg. Pitching has not been an issue at home as they have a 3.08 ERA and a 1.17 WHIP at AT&T Park this year.
The Cubs offense is on fire right now as they come in having averaged 7 rpg in their last 8 games. I can't see their offense getting slowed down in this one vs Jake Peavy, who has struggled recently, with a 5.94 ERA and a 1.56 WHIP in his last 3 starts. He has not pitched well lately and also has a 4.13 ERA in 5 home starts this year. Those starts have been high scoring as his home starts have averaged 9.8 rpg.
Kyle Hendricks has also struggled recently as he has a 7.24 ERA and a 1.90 WHIP in his last 3 starts, while on the road he has posted a 4.44 ERA. Kyle's last 5 starts have averaged a very nice 11 rpg. The Giants have averaged just 3.8 rpg in their last 10 game, but I fel they can get at least 4 here, while the Cubs will also post that much.
Take the Over 7 in this game.

ESPN Basball Betting Odds Detroit Tigers at Chicago Cubs Free Pick

MLB Preview: Detroit Tigers vs Chicago Cubs

Written By David Hess (Follow me on Twitter @DavidHess311)

When: 8:00 PM ET, Wednesday, August 19, 2015
Where: Wrigley Field in Chicago, Illinois
Televised: ESPN

Odds:  The Cubs are listed as -186 favorites, while no total has been set yet because this is Wrigley Field.

The pitching matchup for this game pits Daniel Norris vs Jon Lester.

Daniel Norris has made just 3 starts for the Tigers so far this year and they haven’t been great as he is 1-1 with a 4.76 ERA in those starts. He faced the Cubs just once last year, but it was in relief. In that game he allowed just 1 hit in one inning of work.

Jon Lester hasn’t been the ace that the Cubs were hoping he would be when they signed, but he hasn’t pitched that bad as he has a 3.21 ERA, despite the fact that he is 8-8 on the year. Jon is 4-0 with a 2.03 ERA in his last 5 starts overall, while at home he has gone 6-6 with a 3.20 ERA. Jon know the Tigers from His days in Boston, but he has struggled vs them, going 2-5 with a 5.25 ERA in 10 career starts.

The Important Stats: The Tigers have hit .257 on the road, including .264 vs Lefties, while putting up 4.2 rpg away from home overall. The Tigers have a 4.56 ERA a 1.37 WHIP away from home. The Cubs have hit just .227 at home, including .222 vs lefties, while scoring just 3.52 rpg at Wrigley overall this year. Their home ERA is 3.26, while their home WHIP is 1.13.

The Tigers are still alive for a wildcard spot, but how much longer will it last as they have given up some of their high priced talent this year. The Tigers are just 4.5 games out of a wildcard slot, while the Cubs look like they are headed for the playoffs as they are 17 games above .500 and 3 games ahead of the Giants for the 2nd wildcard spot. This is a team that is playing very well right now as they have won 9 of their last 11 games and I expect that to continue here. The Price is high for a regular side play, so I will make it a RL play. John Lets has been pitching very well right now and is starting to look like the Ace that the Cubs were expecting. In his last 8 starts he has an ERA of just 1.92, while he is 4-0 in his last 5 starts. At home he is just 6-6 but with a solid 3.20 ERA, while Daniel Norris has not really shown anything good in his 3 starts this tear. The Cubs are off a bad loss last night and I look for them to bounce back with a solid win in this one.

Play the Cubs -1.5 over Detroit tonight.
