MLB Playoff Preview: Chicago Cubs vs Pittsburgh Pirates

Written By David Hess (Follow me on Twitter @DavidHess311)

When: 8:00 PM ET, Wednesday, October 7, 2015
Where: PNC Park in Pittsburgh, Pa
Televised: ESPN

Odds:  Pittsburgh opened up as favorites of -110, but the money has com in heavily on the Cubs and they are now the favorites at -131. The OU line has been bet down from 6 to R.5, with juice on the Over (-115)

The Chicago Cubs have made it back to the postseason, with hopes of going all the way to the World Series. This is a team built on youth and experience and anything can happen should they make it past the Pirates in this one. Chicago went 97-65 on the year and they were a solid team on the road where they went 48-33 for the year. the Cubes were 6-3 at PNC Park this year.

Getting the Ball for the Cubs in this one is Jake Arrieta, who just may end up winning the Cy Young award this year. Arrieta has gone 22-6 on the year with a 1.77 ERA, while on the road he has gone a stellar 13-1 with a 1.60 ERA. Jake is 6-1 with a 1.68 ERA in 9 career starts vs Pittsburgh, which includes going 3-0 with a 2.25 ERA in 5 career starts at PNC Park. Jake has faced them 5 times this year and is 3-1 with an 0.75 ERA in those starts.

The Cubs rank 16th in the league in scoring (4.25 rpg) 29th in hitting (.244) and 12th in homers (171). On the road they have hit just .243 and have scored 4.48 rpg.

The Pittsburgh Pirates come in with the 2nd best record in all of baseball, which really seems unfair to them that hey are in this one game playoff and have to face Jake Arrieta to boot. Still Pittsburgh does have the advantage of playing at home where they have gone a very solid 53-28 on the year.

Pittsburgh will send out their own ace in Cole Gerrit, who has gone 19-8 with a 2.60 ERA overall, while at home he went 9-3 with a 2.83 ERA. Gerrit also has goon numbers vs the Cubs in his career, going 7-1 with a 2.88 ERA in 9 starts vs them, including going 2-1 with a 2.13 ERA in 4 starts vs the Cubs this year.

Pittsburgh comes in ranked 11th in the league in scoring (4.30 rpg), 9th in hitting (.260) and 23rd in homeruns (140). At home they have hit .254 and have scored 4.23 rpg on the year.

[934] Chicago/ Pittsburgh Under 5.5 I will be looking at the Under in this game. This is playoff baseball at it's finest as we have two pitchers that not only have great umber this year but also have great career numbers in their meetings with the tams they are facing in this one. Jake Arrietts has allowed just 2 ERs total in his last 9 starts and he has a career 1.68 ERA in 9 starts vs the Pirates. Gerrit Cole hasn't been as dominant as Jake has been this year, but he pitches well at home, has a career 2.88 ERA vs the Cubs and Chicago just isn't a good hitting team. This one has 2-1 written all over it.

ESPN Sunday Night Baseball Giants at Pirates Betting Odds & Free Pick

MLB Preview: San Francisco Giants at Pittsburgh Pirates

Written By David Hess (Follow me on Twitter @DavidHess311)

When: 8:05 PM ET, Sunday, August 23, 2015
Where: PNC Park in Pittsburgh, Pa.
Televised: ESPN

Odds: The Pirates opened as -175 favorites and it has been bet down slightly to -170. The OU Line is at 7.5 with juice on the Under (-115).

The pitching matchup for this game pits Ryan Vogelsong of the Giants vs Francisco Liriano of the Pirates.

Ryan Vogelsong has been in 27 games this year, with 19 of those being as a starter. He is 9-8 with a 3.93 ERA overall, while as a starter he has gone 8-7 with a 3.77 ERA and on the road he has gone 6-6 with a 4.73 ERA overall. He does struggle on the road and has also struggled vs the Pirates some as he is 2-4 with a 3.55 ERA in 6 career starts vs them.

Francisco Liriano is a lefty who has pitched well for Pittsburgh this year, posting an 8-6 mark and a 3.35 ERA on the year. He is 2-0 in his last 4 starts, but with a very high 5.82 ERA. At home he has gone 3-4 with a 4.23 ERA so far. August has been a solid month for him in his career as he is 17-9 with a 4.16 ERA in 40 career starts during the month. In 4 career starts vs the Giants he is 3-1 with a 3.75 ERA.

Important Stats: On the road this year the Giants have hit .267 overall and .272 vs righties, while scoring 4.77 rpg. Their pitching has not been good away from home, with a 4.30 ERA and a 1.31 WHIP. The Pirates have hit a solid .258 at home, including .256 vs righties, while putting up 4.29 rpg.
Very huge series for both teams but the price is a but high for me to make a play on the side, so I will look at total and go with the Over. The Giants have hit a solid .267 on the road and they have scored a solid 4.77 rpg away from home. Liriano has an ERA north of 4 both at home, plus in his career in the month of August, so I can see this improving Giants offense get to him for a few. The Pirates have been a decent offensive team at home, scoring 4.29 rpg and Vogelsong checks in with a 4.73 ERA on the road this year. I see both teams bringing the offense in this one.

Thursday Baseball San Francisco Giants at Pittsburgh Pirates Betting Odds & Free Pick

MLB Preview: San Francisco Giants at Pittsburgh Pirates
Written By David Hess (Follow me on Twitter @DavidHess311)

When: 7:05 PM ET, Thursday, August 20, 2015
Where: PNC Park in Pittsburgh, Pa.
Televised: MLB Network

Odds: The Pirates are listed as -125 favorites with buy back on the Giants at +115. The Total has ben set at 8 (-110)

The pitching matchup for this game has Jake Peavy squaring off against Charlie Morton.

Jake Peavey has made just 10 starts for the Giants this year and it hasn’t been all that good for him as he is 3-5 with a 4.18 ERA overall. He has pitched better of late, posting a 2-1 mark and a 3.45 ERA in his last 5 starts, but is also 1-3 with a 4.23 ERA in 5 road starts this year. Jake is 5-2 with a 2.52 ERA in 8 starts vs the Pirates in his career, but haven’t faced them since 2009.

Charlie Morton hasn’t really pitched all that well this year as he has a 4.26 ERA, but does have a 7-4 record. He has been solid at home though with a 4-1 record and a 3.25 ERA. He does have nice numbers vs the Pirates of late, going 2-1 with a 2.21 ERA in his last 5 starts vs them.

This is a huge series for these teams as they are battling for a wildcard slot. The Pirates would be in the playoffs if they started today, but the Giants have some work to do as they currently sit at 3 games behind the cubs for the final wildcard spot.  The Giants are just 2-7 the last 9 games in this series, but where I will be looking in this game is at the Over. The Over is 6-1-1 the last 8 meetings between these team in Pittsburgh, Plus the Over is 8-2 in Pittsburgh's last 10 as a home favorite and 32-15-4 in San Fran's last 51 road games. The Giants can score on the road, while the Pittsburgh offense has been hot of late and these two teams should be able to get enough runs off of very suspet pitching to put this one OVER the total of 8.
