Virginia Tech Hokies vs Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets College Football Preview & Free Pick

CFB Preview: Virginia Tech Hokies vs Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets

Written By David Hess (Follow me on Twitter @DavidHess311)

When: 7:30 PM ET, Thursday, November 12, 2015
Where: Bobby Dodd Stadium in Atlanta, Georgia
Televised: ESPN 2

Odds:  The Game opened up with Georgia Tech as 5 point favorites and that has been bet down slightly to 3.5 in most shops. The OU line currently sits at 53.5.

The Virginia Tech Hokies come in at just 4-5 on the year, which is very disappointing a they had the talent this year to compete or a trip to the ACC title game. That is not going to happen, but they still have a shot at making it to a bowl game. That makes this game a must. The Hokies were having a good year until a trip to East Carolina stooped all that as they lost that game and have now lost 3 of their last 5 since. The hokies have been a rather average offensive squad this year as they rank 56th in scoring, putting up 30.6 ppg, but they have scored just 26 ppg in the ACC. Their defense hasn’t been as strong as was expected, but they have allowed a decent 24.3 ppg.

The Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets had even higher hopes this year than the Hokies, yet they have a worse record at 3-6. This was a team that many felt would win their division  Maybe teams are starting to figure out the Triple Option that they run. That could be part of it as they have averaged 300+ ypg on the ground the last 4 years, but this year that number is at 267 ypg. That is still good for 8th in the nation. They have been able to move the ball, but they also have made the type of mistakes that lead to missed scoring chances. The Defense has been solid this year as they rank 43rd in yards allowed and 62nd in points allowed (26.1 ppg)

[111] Virginia Tech +3.5 over Georgia Tech
The dog is 8-1 the last 9 in the in the series and that is the way I will go here. Neither team has had a good season so far, but the Hokies are in a better spot to be playing for a bowl game and I feel they have the better defense here as well. Georgia Tech is thinking about a season that might have been, while the Hokies still have something to play for and that should lead them to the big win here.

Virginia Tech Hokies vs Miami Hurricanes College Football Betting Preview & Pick

Virginia Tech Hokies (3-3 SU, 3-3 ATS, 4-2-0 OU) vs Miami Hurricanes (3-2 SU, 3-2 ATS, 2-3-0 OU)
When: 3:30 PM ET, Saturday, October 17, 2015
Where: Sun Life Stadium In Miami Gardens, Florida
Lines: Miami -6
Total: 51.5

This is a big clash in the ACC between a couple of teams that need wins. Virginia Tech comes in off an impressive home win over NC State and they currently stand at 1-1 in the ACC. Miami is now 0-1 in the ACC after a hard fought 29-24 loss at Florida State on Saturday night. Both teams are supposed to be in the mix for the ACC’s Atlantic Division Title.
Michael Brewer was the starting QB for the Hokies to begin the year, be he was injured in game one vs the Buckeyes and it has been Brenden Motley’s team ever since. Brenden hasn’t put up eye popping number this year, but last week he hit 14 of 28 passes for 158 yards and threw three TD passes in the 28-13 Hokies win over NC State. Overall Brenden has hit just 55.8% of his passes for 1019 yards, with ten TD passes and 5 INT. He had been some heat for the struggles of the offense, but he came through vs the Wolfpack.
Brendan didn’t do it all in the win vs the Wolfpack as Isaiah Ford caught all three TD passes and Travon McMillian ran for 96 yards and 1 TD on just 11 carries. Overall the offense ranks 88th in total offense and 39th in scoring (31 ppg). The defense has been decent for the team this year as they rank 40th in yards allowed and 52nd in points allowed (22.3 ppg). One note is that Michael Brewer may be cleared to play his week at QB.
The Miami Hurricanes are off their yearly rivalry game with Florida State, and it wasn’t a happy ending for them. Florida State jumped out to the 14-3 lead in the game and Miami spent the whole game playing catchup. They finally did and took a 24-23 lead with 10 minutes to go in the game, only to have Florida State come right back for the 29-24 win.
The rushing numbers were the story of this game. Miami couldn’t get their ground attack going at all as they tan for a mere 20 yards in the game. On the other side it was a different story as Florida State piled up 248 yards on the ground and at 6.9 yards per pop. Their biggest problem was stopping FSU RB Dalvin Cook, who had 222 yards and 2 TDs in the game. Miami has been a solid offensive team this year, putting up 453.6 ypg of total offense and 34.4 ppg, while on defense they have allowed 383 ypg overall, 168.8 ypg on the ground and 23.2 ppg. Pretty average defensive numbers.

Trends
Virginia Tech is:
  • 6-1 ATS in their last 7 games in Miami
  • 10-4 the last 14 meetings overall
Miami is:
  • 5-11 ATS in their last 16 conference games
  • 2-8 ATS after allowing 280 yards or more passing.

Free College Football Pick: Virginia Tech +6

The Virginia Tech Hokies have had good success ATS in this series of late and are coming off a confidence building win over NC State. Miami comes in having lost two games in a row and their defense has really struggled in the last two games, especially vs the run and that should help the Hokies get going in this one, especially if Brewer gets the start, because he is a better runner at QB than Motley is. Miami has a strong offense, but the Virginia Tech defense is off their best game of that year and that confidence should spill over to this one. Virginia Tech is 1-1 in the ACC, while Miami is 0-2, yet Miami is the six point favorite here. I don’t think so. Va Tech gets the cover and just may win the game outright, especially if Brewer plays.

NC State Wolfpack vs Virginia Tech Hokies College Football Betting Preview & Free Pick

NC State Wolfpack (4-1 SU, 4-1 ATS, 2-3 OU) vs Virginia Tech Hokies (2-3 SU, 2-3 ATS, 4-1 OU)
When: 8:00 PM ET, Thursday, October 8, 2015
Where: Lane Stadium in Blacksburg, Virginia
Lines: Virginia Tech -1.5
Total: 46.5

The NC State Wolfpack have gotten off to a 4-1 start, but they haven’t really played anyone year, except for Louisville and they lost that game 20-13 last week.Eastern Kentucky, Troy, ODU and South Alabama were the four victims of the Wolfpack and NC State was at least 17 point favorites in all of those games, so as you can see they have built their 4-1 record on cupcakes. Last week they took on Louisville at home and really struggled in the game, especially on offense when they put up just 13 points and 228 total yards. This after they averaged 46.3 ppg in their first 4 games. The defense did play well in the game vs the Cardinals as they allowed just 306 yards, including just 103 yards passing. Overall their defense is 3rd in yards allowed and 11th in points allowed, giving up just 13.6 ppg.
The Virginia Tech Hokies have not had a good start to their as they are just 2-3 and that includes a lost at east Carolina as 10 point favorites two weeks ago and a home loss to Pitt last week. This was a team that was favored by many to win the ACC Coastal Division. They are not playing well enough right now for that to hold up. The Defense hasn’t looked as strong as they were supposed to be as they have allowed 347 ypg overall and 197.6 ypg on the ground, which is 102nd in the Nation. The defense had 8 starters back this year so it was supposed to be strength of this team, but not so far. Offensively they are somewhat challenged as they have put up just 382.6 ypg (84th) and 31.6 ppg (69th). Virginia Tech is dealing with issues on both sides of the ball right now.

Free College Football Pick: NC State/ Virginia Tech Under 46.5

NC State put up a bunch of points vs a cupcake schedule, but when they faced a real defense last week they were held in check. Even though the Va Tech defense has struggled some this year, they did play very well last week in their loss to Pittsburgh and with the prospect of going down 0-2 in the ACC, I expect their defense to really play well in this one. The NC State defense has played very good all year and are taking on a very mediocre Virginia Tech offense. This should be a tight defensive battle in Blacksburg  tonight.

College Football Betting Odds & Pick Ohio State Buckeyes at Virginia Tech

CFB Preview: Ohio State Buckeyes vs Virginia Teck Hokies

Written By David Hess (Follow me on Twitter @DavidHess311)

When: 8:00 PM ET, Monday, September, 7, 2015
Where: Lane Stadium in Blacksburgh, West Virginia
Televised: ESPN

Odds: The line for the game opened with Ohio State as 14 point favorites and that has held so far, while the OU Line has been bet down slightly to 52.5, from the opening of 54.

The Ohio State Buckeyes are the reigning National Champs and have been made the favorites to repeat this year. The team is loaded for sure, especially at QB, where they have 3 guys that would start on most teams in America. Braxton Miller did take himself out of the running for the QB job, by moving to WR. That move just makes this team so much more dangerous on offense as there are so many things they can do with him at WR. As of this writing it is still unclear who will pilot the team, (Barrett or Jones). Heck both may play. Ezekiel Elliot is back at RB after rushing for 1878 yards last year and 18 TDs last year, while the Buckeyes also have 6 of the top 7 pass catchers back as well. They will all line up behind one of the best OLs in the Nation. The defense for this team looks very strong as they have 7 starters back from last year, but their is also great depth on this side of the ball. The DL rates as 3rd best in the land, while the LB Corps rates as 2nd best and the secondary rates as 3rd best in the nation. Offense and defense, plus solid special teams. This team has it all.

The Virginia Tech Hokies may just be a sleeper team in the ACC as far as making it to the playoffs after going just 7-6 overall and 3-5 in ACC play last year. For this team it all starts with a defense that will be one of the better ones that Beamer has had at Va Tech. They have 8 starters and 27 lettermen back on this side of the ball, from a group that allowed just 20.2 ppg last year. 9 of their top 12 tacklers are back and they have added the 11th best defensive lineman in the nation in Tim Settle as well, along with the 50th best DB and two more linemen that ranked 63rd and 71st. This will be a deep and scary defense this year. The offense does need to compliment the defense a bit more after averaging just 24.1 ppg last year. Michael Brewer should be ready for a big year, while the running game has its top 8 ball carriers back from last year and the WR corps has it top 3 back as well. The weakness on the offense is the line, which has just 2 starters back and rates as 10th best in the league.

With their defense many are expecting the Hokies to give the Buckeyes a run for their money in this one, especially since they have the game at home in a nationally televised game. That stadium will be rocking, but I have a feeling that Ohio State wants some payback from last year’s loss, which nearly kept them out of the playoffs. The Buckeyes have a huge edge on offense and a slight edge on defense and I just don’t expect the Hokies to score enough points to keep this one close. I look for the Buckeyes to win this one by at least 17 points.
