This is a big clash in the ACC between a couple of teams that need wins. Virginia Tech comes in off an impressive home win over NC State and they currently stand at 1-1 in the ACC. Miami is now 0-1 in the ACC after a hard fought 29-24 loss at Florida State on Saturday night. Both teams are supposed to be in the mix for the ACC’s Atlantic Division Title.
Michael Brewer was the starting QB for the Hokies to begin the year, be he was injured in game one vs the Buckeyes and it has been Brenden Motley’s team ever since. Brenden hasn’t put up eye popping number this year, but last week he hit 14 of 28 passes for 158 yards and threw three TD passes in the 28-13 Hokies win over NC State. Overall Brenden has hit just 55.8% of his passes for 1019 yards, with ten TD passes and 5 INT. He had been some heat for the struggles of the offense, but he came through vs the Wolfpack.
Brendan didn’t do it all in the win vs the Wolfpack as Isaiah Ford caught all three TD passes and Travon McMillian ran for 96 yards and 1 TD on just 11 carries. Overall the offense ranks 88th in total offense and 39th in scoring (31 ppg). The defense has been decent for the team this year as they rank 40th in yards allowed and 52nd in points allowed (22.3 ppg). One note is that Michael Brewer may be cleared to play his week at QB.
The Miami Hurricanes are off their yearly rivalry game with Florida State, and it wasn’t a happy ending for them. Florida State jumped out to the 14-3 lead in the game and Miami spent the whole game playing catchup. They finally did and took a 24-23 lead with 10 minutes to go in the game, only to have Florida State come right back for the 29-24 win.
The rushing numbers were the story of this game. Miami couldn’t get their ground attack going at all as they tan for a mere 20 yards in the game. On the other side it was a different story as Florida State piled up 248 yards on the ground and at 6.9 yards per pop. Their biggest problem was stopping FSU RB Dalvin Cook, who had 222 yards and 2 TDs in the game. Miami has been a solid offensive team this year, putting up 453.6 ypg of total offense and 34.4 ppg, while on defense they have allowed 383 ypg overall, 168.8 ypg on the ground and 23.2 ppg. Pretty average defensive numbers.

The Virginia Tech Hokies have had good success ATS in this series of late and are coming off a confidence building win over NC State. Miami comes in having lost two games in a row and their defense has really struggled in the last two games, especially vs the run and that should help the Hokies get going in this one, especially if Brewer gets the start, because he is a better runner at QB than Motley is. Miami has a strong offense, but the Virginia Tech defense is off their best game of that year and that confidence should spill over to this one. Virginia Tech is 1-1 in the ACC, while Miami is 0-2, yet Miami is the six point favorite here. I don’t think so. Va Tech gets the cover and just may win the game outright, especially if Brewer plays.
