Cougars Off To Slow Start in Pac-12 Play

The Washington State Cougars went 8-4 in non-conference play this year and while they did crush New Mexico on a neutral court, none of their wins were vs a power five conference. Then Pac-12 play started and they lost to USC by 13 in their opener, before grabbing their lone conference win which was vs UCLA. Since then they have lost their last five games and currently reside at the bottom of the conference standings and they will have to do a lot of work to make it to even one of the lesser post season tournaments this year.

The Cougars’ basketball team is built much like their football team and that is plenty of offense, but no defense. The Cougars are relatively deep as they have nine players that have played at least 17 games this year. The offense is led Josh Hawkinson, who averages 16.4 ppg and Ike Iroegbu, who averages 14.5 ppg. They are the only two players in double digits for this team that ranks 123rd in the nation in scoring, putting up 75.9 ppg, while hitting 48.7% of their shots, which is a very solid 20th in the land.  The defensive numbers are not pretty at all as the come in ranked 265th in points allowed, giving up 75.4 ppg and 203rd in defensive FG% at 43.6%. They really need to get that defense fixed.

Trojans Fall Big to Unranked Oregon State

The USC Trojans have had a solid start to their year and they came in to Corvallis ranked 21st in the nation and favored in the game, but the Beavers had other ideas as they won rather easily, 85-70. Gary Payton had a big night for the Beavers, with 22 points and 15 boards and the Trojans just didn’t have an answer for him. The Trojans actually had a four point lead at the half, but were outscored 49-30 in the 2nd half as they totally fell apart after the break. This game was on the heels of falling 89-81 on the road vs Oregon. The Men Of Troy are struggling right now and may be team that we look to fade down the stretch, especially on the road. Lucky for them this one is at home, where they are 11-0 SU and 9-1-1 ATS.

In the loss to the Beavers, the Trojans were led by Elijah Stewart, who had 16 points in the game. Also putting up double figures were Katin Reinhardt (14) and Julian Jacobs (10). The Trojans are not a terribly deep team as they have just seven players that average 7.0 or more ppg, but what they are is balanced as six of those players average in double figures. Now that’s balance. The leader of the group is Jacobs, who averages 12.6 ppg. The Trojans are a strong offensive team as they rank 14th in the nation in scoring, putting up 83.6 ppg, while connecting on 46% of their shots, which is 83rd in the nation. They do struggle at the charity stripe, where they are 260th. On defense they struggle in allowing 73.4 ppg, which is 222nd in the land, but they are a solid 41st in defensive FG%, allowing teams to hit just 40% of their shots.

I do expect this one to be played in the 170s at the very least. Both teams play at a very fast pace on offense and defense is a foreign word to the Cougars, while the Trojans have struggled at that end of the floor as well. The Cougars have allowed 88 ppg in their last five games, which the Trojans have allowed 83 ppg over the same stretch. This one will be fun.

USC Trojans vs Wisconsin Badgers Holiday Bowl Betting Preview & Free Pick

Holiday Bowl Preview: USC Trojans vs Wisconsin Badgers
Written By David Hess (Follow me on Twitter @DavidHess311)

The Wisconsin Badgers come in at 9-3 on the year, but they were just 2-3 SU and 1-4 ATS vs bowl teams this year and their SOS was one of the lower of the bowl teams. That means they really beat up on the weaker teams they played. The Badgers have done it this year with a stout defense that comes in ranked 3rd in the nation in yards allowed, giving up just 267.1 ypg, while ranking first in points allowed, giving up just 13.1 ppg. The Badgers allowed 35 points to Alabama in their opener and they allowed more than 21 points just one other time this year and that was at Maryland. The offense is a conservative one, but with their defense they can afford to be. Joel Stave is the QB and he did throw for 2470 yards, but also threw just 10 TDs to 11 INTs. What’s more alarming for this offense is that they are 97th in the nation in rushing. That is not Wisconsin football. This is a team that is used to being in the top 20 in the nation in rushing. Still they have scored 27.1 ppg, which has been more than enough because of the defense they have.

The USC Trojans come in at 8-5 n the year, which really is not what they were expecting. This is a team hat had loads of talent coming back from last year and were supposed to have a much better year than they did. Still they played in the weak Pac-12 South and won the division, before losing 41-22 to Stanford in the Pac-12 Title game. USC faced the third toughest schedule of all the bow teams and were 6-5 SU & 5-6 ATS in their games vs Bowl teams. The Trojans are just the opposite of the Badgers are they are much stronger on offense than on defense. The offense is led by Cody Kessler, who had a strong year, but more was expected. He did throw for 3315 yards and 28 TDs, but that was 500 yards less and 11 TDs than the year before. Offensively hey are 34th in total yards and 30th in scoring, putting up 34.9 ppg. The defense was to be the real strength of this team this year, but that was not the case as they ranked 66th in yards allowed, 99th vs the pass and 52nd in points allowed, giving up 25.9 ppg.

I’m going with the Badgers in this one. Their defense has been excellent this year and I feel that will be the difference in this game. The Trojans have been good on offense this year, but they have also been inconsistent and they have struggled vs some good defenses like the second meeting vs Stanford (22) and an earlier meeting vs Washington (12). This will be the best defense they will have faced so far this year. USC does not have that kind of defensive presence this year and the Wisconsin offense should wear them down enough to put up enough points to get the outright win here.

USC Trojans vs Notre Dame Fighting Irish College Football Preview & Free Pick

USC Trojans (3-2 SU, 3-2 ATS, 2-3-0 OU) vs Notre Dame Fighting Irish (5-1 SU, 5-1 ATS, 3-3-0 OU)

When: 7:30 PM ET, Saturday, October 17, 2015
Where: Notre Dame Stadium In South Bend, Indiana
Lines: Notre Dame -6.5
Total: 61

What a rivalry this has been over the years, but Notre Dame is looking for revenge after losing 49-14 to USC on the road last year. The Trojans are off a shocking 17-12 home loss to Washington, which was their 2nd loss in the Pac-12 already this season, while the Irish bounced back from a tough loss in Clemson to beat Navy by 17 points.

The USC Trojans come in at 3-2 overall, but they are just 1-2 in the Pac-12. Now the news gets worse for the team as they just found out that head coach Steve Sarkisian has been fired. The announcement was made after he showed up at the team facilities on Sunday appearing intoxicated according to the Los Angeles Daily News. He was not allowed at team meetings or practice on Sunday. Pat Haden stated that Sarkisian is not well and that a leave of absence was needed, and then he was fired the next day. Offensive coordinator Clay Helton will take over the team and is now charged with getting them back on track after their lackluster home loss to Washington.

In the loss to the Huskies, USC totaled just 346 yards overall and just 156 yards passing. This is a team that was averaging 350+ ypg passing and 500+ yards of total offense coming into the game. Cody Kessler’s shot at the Heisman really took a hit after as he hit just 16-29 passes for 156 yards, with no TDs and two INTs in the game. Cody is still having a very good year as he has hit 69.5% of his passes overall for 1453 yards, with 15 TDs and just 3 INTs, but the performance vs the Huskies has to knock him down a notch or two.

Notre Dame had a miserable 2nd half of their season last year in which they won just 1 of their last 6 games, after starting the year at 6-0. One of those losses down the stretch was a 49-14 blowout loss at USC. In that game, USC rolled up 372 passing and 205 yards on the ground, while Notre Dame totaled just 349 yards overall. It was just a bad end to a bad second half of the year for the Irish.

This year USC will face a different Notre Dame team, especially on defense, where the Irish are much stronger than a year ago. Last year the Irish allowed 404 ypg and 29 ppg, compared to allowing just 337.7 ypg and 21.2 ppg this year. They are led by a very stout front wall, that is one of the best in the nation. They are not all defense though, as their offense comes in ranked 14th in total yards (503.5 ypg) and 19th in points scored (37.8 ppg). DeShone Kizer has been very good for the Irish in relief of Zaire at QB as he has thrown for 1143 yards with 8 TDs and 4 INTS.

[204] Notre Dame -6.5 over USC
Couple of things really favor Notre Dame in this game. First the Irish have revenge on their minds from last year's bad loss and second is that this is not a good situational spot for the Trojans. Let us also note that head coach Steve Sarkisian will be taking a leave of absence and will not be on the sidelines for this game.  USC wants to win the Pac-12 and they are off a tough home loss to Washington. Now they have to travel cross-country to take on the Irish, with a home game vs undefeated and highly ranked Utah on deck. Tough spot for the Trojans here. Both teams possess high-octane offenses, but the Irish defense has been more consistent than that of the Trojans. Notre Dame at home should get the job done.

Washington Huskies vs USC Trojans College Football Betting Preview & Free Pick

Washington Huskies (2-2 SU, 3-1 ATS, 1-3 OU) vs USC Trojans (3-1 SU, 3-1 ATS, 2-2 OU)
When: 3:30 PM ET, Thursday October 8, 2015
Where: Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum in Los Angeles, California
Lines: USC -17
Total: 56

The Washington Huskies come in off a loss in the Pac-12 opener. Yes they lost by just 6 points to Cal, but were outgained by 222 yards in the game. Washington really had issues moving the ball in the game as they put up just 259 yards of total offense. One thing that made the final score closer than it was, was a 70 yrd fumble return for a TD by the Huskies Other than that they didn’t play well. They allowed the Bears 342 yards passing in the game and that isn’t a good sign as they are about to face the high powered Trojans. Washington will need to be better vs the pass as they continue their Pac-12 schedule, but more importantly they must improve on an offense that is 100th in the nation in total yards. Right now they have no shot at outscoring the high powered offenses that are in this league. You need offense to compete in the Pac-12 and right now  the Huskies don’t have it.
The Trojans have no issues at all on the offensive side of the ball as they have put up 532 yards per game of offense this year, which is 11th in the nation. Their passing game has been excellent as they have averaged 357 ypg through the Air, which ranks 9th in the nation and they have scored 46.8 ppg, which is 5th. Cody Kessler came into the year as one to watch out for in the Heisman chase and he hasn’t disappointed as he has hit 73% of his oasses for 1297 yards, with 15 TDs to just 1 INT. As you can see, the Washington defense will have it’s hands full in this one. Defensively the Trojans have played a bend but don’t break style as they are 91st in yards allowed and 90th vs the pass, but they allow just 17.5 ppg, which is 22nd in the nation.

Trends
Washington Is:
  • 0-5 ATS their last 5 as a road dog of more than 14
  • 16-41-2 ATS their last 59 games in October
USC is:
  • 15-7 ATS their last 22 following a Bye Week
  • The Host is 5-1 the last 6 in the series

Free College Football Pick: USC -17 over Washington

I just can’t see Washington staying in this game. They just don’t have the offense to do so, even vs a USC team that gives up plenty of yards. Yes the Trojans give up yards, but not points as they have allowed just 17.5 ppg on the year. I can’t see Washington putting up many points in this, but I can see them giving up plenty as they won’t be able to stop the passing offense of the Trojans. USc just Crushed Arizona State on the road and their last home game was a bad loss vs Stanford, so I really look for them to pour it on in this one. USC but at least 21 i this one.

USC Trojans vs Arizona State Sun Devils College football Betting Preview & Pick

Huge game in the Pac-12 tonight as The USC Trojans will invade Sun Devil Stadium to take on the Arizona State Sun Devils. The game is scheduled to start at 10:30 PM (ET) and will be televised on ESPN. Written by David Hess Follow Me on Twitter @DavidHess311

USC Trojans vs Arizona State Sun Devils Betting Odds provided by 5Dimes
USC                           -5.5
Arizona State             +5.5

Over/ Under:                64

The USC Trojans started the year with a couple of cupcakes in Arkansas State and Idaho and they did what they were supposed to do with those teams and that is crush them. USC outscored the two teams by a combined 99 points. Well last week the competition got tougher and the result was much different than their first two games as they opened their Pac-12 season at home vs Stanford and ended up losing that game 41-31. This was the year the Trojans were supposed to take the Pac-12 title and they still might, but they didn’t really look good in the loss to the Cardinal. Maybe they were looking ahead to this game as it is a big revenge game for them. Last year the Trojans led the Sun Devils at home by 3 points in the final second before Bercovici hit strong with a hail mary pass as time expired. USC is now 1-5 ATS their last 6 games vs Arizona State. The USC offense will be tough for teams to stop this year, but their defense showed holes in the loss to Stanford as they allowed 474 yards to a Stanford offense that showed very little in their first 2 games.

Arizona state started off their year with a trip to Texas A&M and were picked by many to win that game. This is a team that is very strong on offense, has 17 starters back overall and should have had a much improved defense, but that didn’t pan out as they were blasted 38-17 by the Aggies. They then went out and played a very mediocre game vs Cal- Poly, beating the FCS opponent by just 14 points, as 34 point favorites. They then had a home game vs New Mexico and led just 10-0 at the half, before pulling away to win 34-10. The Sun Devils are 2-1 on the SU but 0-3 ATS so far. The offense hasn’t been great vs some weak defenses so far this year, while the defense has been very average vs 2 offenses that last couple of week that will not be great this year. the Sun Devils have been very strong vs the pass this year as hey rank 9th in the nation in that department, but that may be because they have taken on a few run heavy teams in the early going. They rank 107th the run, giving up 215.3 ypg.

Free College Football Pick
[302] USC -5.5 over Arizona State
I will look at the Trojans to get a measure of revenge here and getting them off a tough home loss will help matters here even more. Two years ago the Trojans lost to ASU on this field by a score of 62-41 and last year ASU beat them at USC by a score of 38-34. ASU won that game on a last second hail mary. USC is a legitimate contender in the PAC-12 and While ASU was also considered one, they just haven't played all that well so far. They struggled on defense vs Texas A&M in their opener and will have some of the same issues vs the USC squad that has put up 557 ypg of total offense so far. The Trojans struggled on defense last week and that can only get them more fired up for this one. This a sweet revenge spot for a Trojan team that is far better than they showed last week and will prove it with a nice DD win here.
