This is always a fun battle between two SACC rivals that really don’t like each other. Duke has not had a great year overall, while Carolina is fighting to stay atop the league standings. This should be an war tonight.

Duke comes into the game at 19-6 overall and 8-4 in the ACC They still have a shot at the conference regular season title, but only if they win this game. Duke has been a mystery at times this year and they do have a couple of home losses, which is not normal for this team. Duke does come in on a four game roll and just beat Virginia on was was a controversial call at the end of the game (Yes Duke got lucky). This is a team that has the talent to put it all together and end up winning the ACC tournament or they could just get knocked out early in that tournament as well. Duke is a mystery overall, but what is not a mystery is their offense that ranks 13th in the nation in scoring, putting up 83.4 ppg, while hitting 47.6% of their shots overall (31st) and 39.2% of their shots from long range (20th). Strong offense as usual for this team, but they are lacking on defense this year as they come in at 158th in points allowed (70.9 ppg) and 204th in defensive FG% (43.8%). That defense could be their downfall eventually this year.
The North Carolina Tar Heels come in at 21-4 overall and 10-2 in the SACC, which puts them 1 full game ahead of both Miami and Virginia in the league standings. The Heels have gone 13-0 at home this year and have outscored their opponents by 20.3 ppg overall at home, including 15.7 ppg in ACC play.  This is not a team that vis a real mystery, but they are also not clearly the best team in the league as the Irish, Duke, Miami, Syracuse and the Cavs are all playing really well and anyone of those teams can knock out North Carolina in the ACC tournament. Still this is a strong team that is hard to stop on offense as they are 9th in the nation in scoring, putting 83.8 ppg on 48.3% shooting which is 21st. Their weakness in from long range, where they are 302nd in the land. They also struggle at defending the three-ball, ranking 298th in that department and that is not a good stat to have when facing Duke. Overall the Heels are 145th in points allowed (70.2 ppg) and 89th in defensive FG% (41.5%

[743] Duke/ North Carolina Over 162
Earlier this year Duke played a 95-91 game vs Notre Dame and this one has the feel of that game. This one also has the feel of OT, but I don’t think we will need it here. Both of these teams play uptempo and both are in the top 20 in the nation in scoring. Duke has struggled on defense this year and while the Heels have played decent defense, their weakness at that end of the floor (defending the three) is the strength of the Duke offense. I can see a lot of threes going in for Duke here, while Carolina’’s uptempo pace will help them score plenty vs this down Duke defense. This one should be a lot of fun so sit back and enjoy.
