The Temple Owls are no longer undefeated as they were beaten at home 24-20 by Notre Dame on Saturday night, while SMU’s long season continues as they lost to Tulsa 41-30, which was their 6th loss in a row.
Temple Falls From The Ranks Of The Unbeaten
The Temple Owls are no longer unbeaten this year as they fell 24-20 at home to the Fighting Irish on Saturday night. It was a great game and Temple proved that they were worthy of being ranked in the Top 25. Temple was outgained by 171 yards in the game, but still their defense came up big in spots when needed and they did pick off a couple of Notre Dame passes in this game. Temple did go up 20-17 with five minutes left in the game, but then Notre Dame marched down and scored the go-ahead TD with two minutes to go.
PJ Walker did not have a good game as he connected on just 13 of 30 passes for 188 yards with a TD and one INT. That INT was very costly as it was on their final drive when they were trying to win the game. Temple really has nothing to be ashamed of and they still are the best team in their conference, so winning that title is priority one now. I see a nice bowl bid on the horizon for this team, especially with defense that ranks 9th in the nation, allowing 15.8 ppg.
Defense Is Reason SMU Will Not Go Bowling
The Mustangs are just 1-7 on the year and a big reason for that is a pathetic defense that ranks 121st in the nation in total yards, 108th vs the pass, 123rd vs the run and 124th in points allowed, giving up 43.6 ppg. This after allowing 41 ppg and 499 ypg last year. This team has had bad defense for years now and it is a shame this year as their offense is much improved.
Last year the Mustangs averaged a mere 11 ppg on 269 ypg of total offense, but this year they brought back nine starters and they have improved greatly, putting up 414.2 ypg and 28.8 ppg on the year so far. They have been solid passing team, putting up 244 tpg through the air after throwing for just 169 ypg last year. Matt Davis has had a solid year under center for the Mustangs, throwing for 1775 yards with 14 TDs to just four INTs on the year. If this team had just an average defense they would have a shot at a bowl game.

Pick: SMU +14
Going with the old “Bubble Burst Theory”. Temple had their undefeated season go down the drain in what was an exciting and emotional game on national TV vs the Irish. Now how do they get up for one of the worst teams in the nation, especially with a date vs a much tougher South Florida team on deck. SMU has no defense at all, but their offense is strong and I feel that they will score more than enough points to keep this one close vs a Temple team that is in a bad spot situatutionaly.
