Saturday afternoon and we get a matchup of a couple of struggling SEC Teams that need wins badly. Vanderbilt comes in 2-3 overall and 0-2 in the SEC, while South Carolina is a shocking 0-4 in the SEC and 2-4 overall for the year. Can’t remember the last time that South Carolina was 0-4 in the conference.
The Commodores have not had a good year, but they did get a nice comeback win on the road vs Middle Tennessee in their last game before their bye week. Middle Tennessee scored a TD early in the 4th quarter of that game to take a 13-3 lead, but then a 29 yards TD by Johnny McCrary ran for a 29 yard score to make it 13-10 and finally it was a 39 yard TD run by Ralph Webb that put them ahead for good with just 1:12 left in the game.
Vandy is still just 2-3 overall and 0-2 in the SEC. They are not a good offensive team as they rank 109th in the nation in scoring, putting up just 21.2 ppg, but they are a solid defensive team, ranking 26th in points allowed, giving up just 18.4 ppg. On another note, South Carolina has been hit with major flooding and Vanderbilt players used their bye week to help out by loading 2 big trucks with 3000 cases of water, four generators and 400 pairs of shoes.
The Old Ball Coach is hanging in up. On Monday night Steve Spurrier made the announcement to his players and coaches that he has decided to retire, effective immediately. Spurrier was the Gamecocks all-time winning coach and he has had just two losing season in his career. This will be one of them and his first year at Duke in 1987 was the other.
Thanks to the 0-4 SEC start by the Gamecocks, Steve was getting tired of hearing all those questions about the game passing him by and about his age, so he felt this was the right time to pull the trigger. Last week was just the final straw when they took on LSU in a game that was played in Baton Rouge, instead of Columbia, South Carolina due to the flooding there. The Gamecocks lost the game 45-21 and were outgained 624-283 in the game and allowed the LSU ground attack to pile up 396 yards, with 158 of them coming from the nation’s leading rusher, Leonard Fournette. No interim coach has yet been named, but one possibility is DC Jon Hoke

Free College Football Pick: South Carolina/ Vanderbilt Under 44
Can’t look anywhere else in the game as it features two very bad offenses. Yes the South Carolina defense has struggled this year, but Vanderbilt just doesn’t have the offenses to take advantage of that. The Commodores have scored 17 points or less in all four of their games vs FBS team this year and in their two road games they have totaled just 33 points. The Gamecock offense scored 31 points vs Central Florida a few weeks ago, but vs the SEC this year they have averaged just 19 ppg. That will not improve tonight vs a Commodore defense that statistically is one of the better in the SEC. In their opener they allowed just 14 points to high powered WKU and they allowed just 31 to Georgia and 27 to Ole Miss, who put up 43 on Alabama. This is a good defense. Two conservative and bad scoring offenses vs two defense that can stop those offenses should make for a low scoring game here.
